The bright blue-and-green label on pints of Island Homemade Ice Cream is hard to miss. Founded in 2004 by Patti and Gary Sundberg who devoted themselves to making small-batch delicious ice cream, Bob Lake took over the business in 2020. Bob loves ice cream and wanted this popular business to remain in Vermont. He has added more stores, restaurants, and resorts to a growing list of customers offering gourmet, premium ice cream and dairy-free sorbets.
Island Homemade Ice Cream sells frozen happiness and lives up to their slogan, “Made in Vermont by Vermonters.” That translates to offering 17 delicious flavors to choose from, with more to come. They incorporate mostly local ingredients, including their base mix from East Hardwick’s Kingdom Creamery of Vermont. Their maple syrup hails from West View Maple Works in Grand Isle, and chocolate comes from Barre Callebaut in St. Albans. Their mission is to offer ice cream statewide and beyond, utilizing the original recipes developed by its founders.

Rapid growth under Bob required securing a new location. Now in Williston in an old 1960s Sealtest ice cream factory, Island has found the perfect home. And nearby, a scoop shop will lure customers to enjoy a scoop (or two or three) of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Sea Salt Caramel, Mint Chocolate Chip, or Pink Grapefruit sorbet. And then there is the dreamy Island Coconut.
Operations manager Maura Fitzgerald is excited to welcome customers to Island’s first-ever scoop shop. Her favorite flavors are hard to pin down, but she admits that mint chocolate chip tops her list as do sea salt caramel and double chocolate supreme. There is a flavor at Island Homemade Ice Cream for every palate whether you visit the Williston scoop shop or purchase a pint at your local market. They promise to deliver frozen happiness either way.
