Exploring the Health Benefits of Hemp through cooking with it and using it as medicine.

Inflammation is a term used to describe symptoms related to a wide range of issues, from stiff joints and neck pain to gluten intolerance and cardiovascular disease. Inflammation is an immune response that serves as a crucial first step in the healing process. However, when it becomes chronic, it can lead to the persistent kinds of reactions that become challenging over time.

There are many food and herb-based remedies for inflammation, from turmeric and ginger to fish oil and bone broth. One that has been forgotten until recently is hemp. Its use dates back to ancient history, when many traditional cultures used it for food, health care and weaving, among other things. The United States produced hemp for clothing and paper until 1937, when it became illegal to grow because of its connection to marijuana.

As some states across the U.S. legalize its use again, more people will be able to take advantage of hemp’s health benefits. In states where its use is legal, farmers are growing hemp that is high in healing compounds. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of over 60 compounds found in hemp, which belong to a class of phytochemicals called “cannabinoids.” Hemp contains only trace amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive component of cannabis sativa.

CBD acts on the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which resides in the brain as well as the nervous system. It is comprised of lipid-based neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors. These receptors help regulate a variety of physiological and cognitive processes, from mood to pain regulation. CBD is the primary non-psychoactive component of cannabis. It contains anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anxiolytic and anti-psychotic compounds. According to the Journal of Experimental Medicine, of all of hemp’s components, CBD is unique in its capacity to suppress chronic infl ammation and neuropathic pain.

Psychiatric and pharmacological studies have shown this unique compound may reduce anxiety for those who experience conditions such as panic attacks and obsessive compulsive disorder. It may also help reduce the effects of epilepsy and schizophrenia.

With all of these healing properties, it is fortunate that CBD oil is becoming more readily available to those who seek an alternative to pharmaceuticals when trying to balance mood and reduce inflammation. Because it is not habit-forming, CBD is safe for most people to use.

It is effective both topically and internally. By taking the flowering tops of CBD hemp and cooking them in coconut oil, you can create a product that’s easy to rub into sore muscles or ingest for pain relief and anxiety reduction. Please consult with a health care provider to address any questions you have about taking CBD internally.
