Make these cannabis oil recipes from local Stowe, Vermont chefs and business owners.

Cannabidiol—with a little practice, that word will roll right off your tongue, as smoothly as the oil itself. Or you can just call it CBD, like the rest of us. CBD is one of the most prevalent chemical compounds found in the hemp plant, a member of the cannabis family. However, unlike its cousin THC, CBD is non-psychoactive and safe for all ages to enjoy.

Depending on the medium (oil or honey, for example) that carries it, CBD can taste nutty, grassy or earthy since it’s pressed from hemp flowers and seeds. It can also be peppery or minty. Without getting too science-y, hemp comes from the same family as hops; don’t be surprised if you pick up the slight bitterness found in your favorite juicy IPA.

CBD is increasingly available online and at natural food markets and other shops all around the state. But before you invest in a small vial of CBD oil, which can be costly, do your research, as the taste profile and quality vary. High-priced CBD generally comes from organically grown plants, undergoes an environmentally safe extraction process and should have verified third-party lab testing.

Several companies around Vermont are producing high-quality CBD, which can be incorporated into a multitude of foods and beverages. We invited two popular Stowe businesses— Laughing Moon Chocolates and Green Goddess Café—to share their favorite recipes that feature CBD.
